A Gallery of Human Light Workers

Ingrid Newkirk

Ingrid Newkirk, cofounder and president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), has spoken internationally on animal rights issues, from the steps of the Canadian Parliament to the streets of New Delhi, India, where she spent her childhood. She has worked as a deputy sheriff; as a Maryland state law enforcement officer with the highest success rate in convicting animal abuses, as a director of cruelty investigations for the second oldest humane society and as Chief of Animal Disease Control for the Commission on Public Health in Washington, DC. Inspired by Animal Liberation by Peter Singer, she founded PETA in 1980.

  John Phillips

A long-time animal advocate, John was named the first ever Executive Director of the League of Humane Voters of New York City (LOHV-NYC) in 2004. Under his leadership, LOHV-NYC has become a potent force for animals in New York City, raising tens of thousands of dollars and endorsing and campaigning for dozens of humane candidates at the city and state level. John's efforts have educated countless people about the suffering of animals. In January 2007, John received In Defense of Animals' Companion Animal Guard Award for his work with LOHV-NYC.
